Oxford United played the same team as the stunning 4-0 win over Charlton, but the league’s top scorers struggled to add to their tally with sub Ciaron Brown saving the attackers blushes. Despite having 19 shots, only 2 were on target, but that was largely down to a resilient Crewe keeping them at bay.

The players would be forgiven, as it’s been an emotional time since the news was announced of the death of club legend Joey Beauchamp, who was still a popular figure within the club.

Former striker Dan Agyei lined up for Crewe, and was denied on his return by Jack Stevens. The U’s however were kept at distance and were forced into long shots that were were blocked or off target.

After the break, it was Aygei and Long for Crewe who looked most dangerous, and it was an injury to Captain Elliot Moore who changed the game. On came loanee Ciaron Brown at the back, but it was upfront where he made his mark.

in the 65th minute, The Yellows had a free kick on the left side of the goal. After a goal mouth scramble it fell to Brown who drove a calm left-foot finish through a crowded box.

It was a well-fought win against a side who battled hard to defy their bottom place position, and made even more important as both Plymouth and Wycombe lost, and Sunderland drew, giving the U’s breathing space in 4th position with an enviable goal difference.

It’s only fitting that Cambridge will be the visitors on Saturday for an emotional day at the Kassam as we remember Joey, with the absence of Swindon and West Ham in the division.
