Burton Albion vs Oxford United Match Report

With manager Karl Robinson isolating after a positive Covid test, Matty Taylor inspired the U’s to a second win on the spin in League One to jump back into the playoff positions.

Simon Eastwood was making a rare start in between the posts with Jack Stevens missing with glandular fever and Holland also started.

It took just 49 seconds for Taylor to make his mark, firing past Garratt after collecting a long ball from right-back Sam Long for his 5th goal of the season.

Taylor should have doubled the lead with three good chances as he had two efforts saved and had a Sykes cross diverted as he was ready to pounce.

Herbie Kane and Cameron Brannagan yet again dominated in the centre of the pitch, and the latter forced two excellent saves from Burton keeper Ben Garratt.

The U’s finally made the pressure count in the 43rd minute, with Long again playing a killer pass which Holland drove home via a double deflection of Hamer and Bostwick, with the defender given the ignominy of the own goal.

After the break, Ben Garratt continued his man of the man display by denying Holland and keeping the U’s at bay, until the 80th minute when the home side snatched one back to create a ripple of panic among the away fans.

Matty Taylor put the nerves to rest as he raced to a through ball only to be tripped by Garratt to blot his copybook. Top Scorer James Henry stepped up to bury the penalty for his 6th of the season and to seal the 3 points and grab the 6th place and final playoff position.
