Oxford United vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Report

Matty Taylor got back amongst the goals as Oxford United beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 in League One.

After a winless start to 2022, manager Karl Robinson brought in Jack Stevens and Billy Bodin to the line up at the expense of Simon Eastwood and Ryan Williams in a bid to galvanise his side. Fielding just 6 subs in the process.

It looked a smart move, as Bodin sent a 4th minute corner over which Jordan Thorniley headed narrowly wide.

But the game plan came undone as early as the 7th minute when Wednesday took the lead through Barry Bannan as he fired in outside the box.

The U’s instantly rallied and Bodin again was instrumental as he crossed for Matty Taylor who skied the chance. The out of form striker has not scored in 2022 before today, and last found the net in the 3-0 victory against AFC Wimbledon.

Both sides had chances, but that man Taylor finally found the net on the stroke on half time to the delight of the home fans. It came from great work by Marcus McGuane who delivered a cross that Taylor just had to get his head on to direct into the bottom corner. And the U’s were good value to go into the break at 1-1.

Luke McNally came on for captain Elliot Moore who was struggling with what looked like a thigh injury, and Oxford looked up for the fight after the break. But it was Sheffield Wednesday who took the lead again in the 60th minute as Josh Windass buried the ball past Stevens in the U’s goal.

But it didn’t take long for United to draw level again, as just minutes later Taylor bundled in for his second to make it 2-2.

Robinson rolled the dice as he sent on Sam Winnall for Holland in the 74th minute, and it paid dividends as he headed in Bodin’s corner in the 84th minute for Oxford to win all the points.
