AFC Wimbledon vs Oxford United Match Report

With only 3 games in League One due to International fixtures, Oxford missed out the chance to go top of the summit with a 3-1 loss away against AFC Wimbledon, who started the day 15th.

Ryan Williams came in for Gavin Whyte who was on International duty with Northern Ireland, in the only change since last Saturdays win over Lincoln. New loan signing Herbie Kane who excelled midweek had to settle for a place on the bench.

The U’s had a lively opening but struggled to create any clear cut chances, and were frustrated with AFC’s high defensive line catching them out offside twice in the opening 5 minutes.

James Henry tried to repeat his goal-scoring feats with a blocked shot in the 6th minute which deflected for a corner. But the first 15 minutes were scrappy and Seddon got a yellow card for a bad foul.

It was Stephens in the Oxford goal who had the first save to make, when Luke McCormick hit a weak shot into the centre of the goal, and Stephens again was forced into action by Guinness-Walker.

Sykes finally got a chance on target in the 32nd minute but AFC were the more dangerous leading up until the break keeping Stephens busy.

In first half injury time Sykes finally made the breakthrough when he robbed Hartigan and rolled home a delightful finish to give Oxford the lead and send them top of the table.

Much like last Saturday the position on the summit was not to last, driven by a tenacious and battling AFC side. The dangerous Rudoni headed home another set-piece, to bring the scores level.

Manager Karl Robinson used all three substitutions to introduce Kane, Winnall, and Holland who was denied a great chance to put the U’s back into the lead. Mere minutes later another set-piece saw Nightingale head in, and Rudoni got his second to seal the match and send Oxford down to 7th.
