Oxford United dropped out of the play-off places as their poor form in 2022 continued in a 2-0 loss to Wycombe Wanderers, which saw the Chairboys take top spot in League One.

Into the lineup came Jordan Thorniley and Marcus McGuane, with McNally and Whyte dropping to the bench.

Last Saturday a trip to Lincoln saw the same result, but the U’s were at least full of fight this week and had a strong opening half hour. Nathan Holland had an effort cleared off the line and David Stockdale denied him twice which could have changed the course of the game.

Typically, Wycombe scored with their first shot on target after Curtis Thompson fired in a corner through a crowd of legs, but the U’s were resilient to hold out until half-time to regroup.

Moore almost got the equaliser when his header was saved, but Wycombe had chances to seal the game too.

Brandon Hanlon doubled the lead after an Oxford attack broke down and Wycombe counter attacked, Garath McCleary split the defence for an easy finish.

Manager Karl Robinson was forced into a double sub so brought on Henry and Whyte for Williams and McGuane and they helped to create chances for Brannagan and fellow sub Winnall, but it was too much of a mountain to climb.

Next game is Sheffield Wednesday at home which is fast becoming a must win game in the battle for the play-offs and team morale.
