Cheltenham Town vs Oxford United Match Report

Oxford United slumped to a 1-0 loss against newly promoted Cheltenham to slip to the bottom half of the table thanks to Alfie May’s goal in League One.

The U’s away form now means just 1 point from the 4 games, and the flirtation with the top of the table seems a distant memory.

Sam Long came in at rightback, with Forde dropping to the bench and in the absence of Brannagan, Herbie Kane made his first full league start.  The on-loan creative midfielder looks an astute signing, and pulled the strings with a solid performance

It could have been a very different result had Oxford turned their first half pressure into goals. Cheltenham had Scott Flinders to thank for solid goal-keeping denying  James Henry twice with some acrobatic saves.

But the danger signs were there at the other end, as May’s deflected shot hit the post and both teams went into the break at 0-0.

Cheltenham were fired up for the second have and came close three times, before an unmarked May finally broke the deadlock in the 68th prodding in a low cross.

Robinson brought on Aygei and Holland shortly after, but neither could help break down a resolute Cheltenham defence.
