Accrington Stanley vs Oxford United Match Report

Miss-firing Oxford United tasted defeat at Accrington Stanley’s brilliantly named Wham Stadium. After the drama of Saturdays dramatic 3-2 win over Portsmouth, the game was a bit of a snore fest for U’s fans. It was a case of wake me up before you go go for the 307 away fans at the Crown Stadium (named after Sponsors Wham Plastic Home containers).

Oxford reverted to the usual 4-2-3-1 formation as Ciaron Brown replaced Luke McNally and Billy Bodin was rested after his impressive run in the team, with Marcus McGuane coming in. New signing Sam Baldock had to make do with a place on the bench.

The U’s struggled in the rain and only recorded 3 shots on target for the first loss in 5 games after a great scoring run. Incidentally, the last loss was also a 2-0 reversal against Wycombe.

Buoyed by recent form, the U’s first chance came in the 10th minute as Moore headed a Forde corner wide, with Holland having his skidding effort saved.

Seddon and Williams also turned the screws but Accrington also had their chances and drew first blood in the 28th minute through John O’Sullivan’s shot from distance after a weak headed clearance.

With Saturdays comeback still fresh, the U’s fans still had hope but did little to worry their opponents until the half-time whistle blew.

The second half was open and manager Robinson rolled the dice by bringing on Sykes and Winnall to bring fresh legs into the midfield.  And then in the 68th minute an injury to Brown saw fellow new signing Baldock on for his debut and a makeshift back three with a 3-5-2.

Baldock scored 24 goals in his most prolific season when in League One for Bristol City in 2013-14, which led to a move to Brighton and Hove Albion where he tasted Premier League football. Even at 32 you’d expect goals but a rainy night in Lancashire isn’t the best place to find your feet.

It was Accrington who got a late goal this time as Hamilton finished off a counter attacking move to finish the game off.

Oxford retain 5th place, and next up is Bolton on Saturday.
