Charlton Athletic vs Oxford United Match Report

Oxford United produced a Rolls Royce performance to run out deserved 4-0 winners and climb up to 4th in league one. The romp was sparked by Matty Taylor’s double and topped off with a goal from Sam Baldock on his full debut before Brannagan iced the cake late on.

Goal-scorer Baldock came in to replace injured Billy Bodin, and Ryan Williams replaced an out of form Steve Seddon. But Gavin Whyte stole the show with his hat-trick of assists as top scorer Taylor snatched a 7-minute brace.

Manager Karl Robinson went with a 3-4-1-2 formation with the attacking full-backs of Sykes and Williams and a back three of Long, Moore and McNally, the latter being replaced by Ciaron Brown later in the match.

The attacking line up paid dividends as Kane and Brannagan ran the game as the early chances fell to Taylor for a quick-fire brace. The first a well worked team move which saw Sykes find Taylor in space to lift it over the Charlton keeper.

The second was all down to the industrious Williams, who won a tackle and then delivered an in-perfect cross for Taylor to finish off.

It was a great first half the U’s and Sam Baldock ensured the second half was just a profitable as showed the U’s fans what he is capable of with a smart finish, again after a Sykes assist.

There was still time for Brannagan to fire yet another screamer from distance to round off a great 4-0 away win and get up to 4th on goal difference. It was a worthy result for the 1987 away fans who braved storms and train cancellations to make the trip to London.

Next up is a trip to bottom of the table Crewe on Tuesday night, where the Yellows will hope for an equally impressive win.
