It was a disappointing night at Fratton Park as ultimately two late first half goals sealed the win for Pompey.

After 3 wins in a week, a changed side saw Marcus Browne make his first start and he took his chance with both hands with stunning solo goal in the first 3 minutes.

Nathan Holland and Browne crossed paths at West Ham, and it was the formers slide pass that released the midfielder to jink his way into the box before a fine finish into the roof of the net.

The U’s looked defensively solid and good value for the lead until the the 43rd minute when Ragget steered a header expertly into the corner of the net.

It visibly shook the Yellows, who then gave the ball away when attacking and left Harness with all the space in the centre of the park to counter, he released Hirst who fired into the net. 2-1 down at half-time and the defence exposed again.

Defensive frailties aside, the attack does look potent and the U’s had chances, but were undone at the back yet again. Hayden Carter was not closed down as he moved the ball forward then unleased an unstoppable 30 yarder Branngan would have been proud of.

Oxford still had chances, and were almost undone by Hirst again when he forced Stevens into a fine reaction save. Manager Karl Robinson rolled the dice with attacking subs, and it was Luke McNally who steered in a late goal but it was not enough.

United still 4th by virtue of playing more games, and time to recover before Burton at the Kassam on Saturday.
