Oxford United fought back to win 4-2 against Cambridge United on a day raw with emotion as the Kassam said goodbye to local hero Joey Beauchamp. Prior to the match, fans laid tributes at the Ox statue, and Joey’s daughters laid wreaths to a thunderous minutes applause.

10’000 fans wiped away the tears before the mood changed. Former U’s forward Sam Smith scored an early goal for the visitors then celebrated in front of the home crowd.

But the Yellows were determined to do Beauchamp justice and local lad Matty Taylor fired in Baldock’s flick on after a Williams cross. The top scorer was captain for the day, and he celebrated by pointing upwards. 1-1 at half time.

After the break, Smith was the villain again as he scored his second, but at least went to the away fans to celebrate more goals than he did in his loan spell.

Cameron Brannagan is fast becoming a cult hero himself round these parts, and he was on queue to equalise again after another Baldock assist.

In the match programme, Baldock talked of watching Beauchamp from the terraces of the Manor Ground so it was fitting that he added to the two assists with a goal of his own finishing off Taylor’s cross.

There was still time for Brannagan to crack in a late forth, giving a deserved 3 points to honour Joey.
