Lord Mayor of Oxford Mohammed Altaf-Khan sworn in

The 57th Lord Mayor of Oxford, Mohammed Altaf-Khan, was sworn in with all the traditional pomp and ceremony of the city’s annual mayor-making service on Monday.

The bells of Carfax Tower were rung from 5.45pm as Mr Altaf-Khan took over the office from Rae Humberstone.

The city councillor for Headington was born in Kashmir and came to the UK in the late 1980s to join his family, who settled in Oxford in the 1960s.

Mr Altaf-Khan said: “It is an honour for me to represent the city and its citizens as their Lord Mayor.”

Cllr Humberstone has been selected as deputy lord mayor.

Cllr Bob Price was re-elected leader of Oxford City Council for another four years and Cllr Ed Turner was chosen as deputy leader again.
