Government Help For Some Oxfordshire Residents With Rising Energy Bills

Council taxpayers in Oxford are set to receive a £150 council tax rebate to help with rising energy bills after the Government announced that households in council tax bands A-D are eligible for the rebate.

Oxford City Council will make payment to eligible households as soon as possible. There will be no need for householders who pay by direct debit to apply for or chase the rebate. Oxford City Council will make payment to the person liable to pay the council tax for the household.

Direct debit payments

If an eligible household pays their council tax by direct debit they will be able to receive the £150 directly into their bank account. The Council will start making these payments as soon as possible after 1 April (the date when the scheme comes into effect). If householders are not already signed up to direct debit payments they can do so on the Pay Your Council Tax page.

On top of this rebate, discretionary funding of £327,300 has also been provided to support vulnerable people and individuals on low incomes that do not pay council tax, or that pay council tax for properties in bands E-H.

The Council can determine how best to make use of this funding to provide payment to other households who are energy bill payers but not covered by the council tax rebate. We are currently in the process of devising our discretionary scheme, the details of which will be announced soon.

A leaflet explaining the scheme has been sent with all council tax bills which will shortly be received by council taxpayers.

Councillor Ed Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Asset Management said:

“Energy costs are rising fast and so we are keen to make sure that those who are entitled to this rebate receive it as soon as possible. To ensure that happens I want to encourage anyone who is not signed up to pay their council tax by direct debit to do so. It will not only make it easier for the City Council to get the money to you, it will also ensure you receive it as soon as possible. We will publicise details of our extra, discretionary scheme to support residents as soon as we can.”
